It’s hard to believe that Zenless Zone Zero first launched back on July 4, 2024, for PlayStation 5, PC via the Epic Games Store, and mobile devices, yet here we are in 2026 with the streets of New Eridu more chaotic and thrilling than ever. HoYoverse really started something special with this urban fantasy ARPG, and looking back at those early pre-registration milestones – hitting 35 million players before launch – it’s clear the community was hungry for something fresh. The final closed beta ended just hours before global release, and when the servers went live, the energy was electric. Even now, two years later, you can still feel that spark every time a new Hollow opens up or a limited-time event drops.

What makes Zenless Zone Zero stand out isn’t just its rapid-fire combat or the eye-popping visuals; it’s the world itself. Modern civilization was shattered by the emergence of “Hollows” – strange spatial anomalies that spawn hostile Ethereal monsters. New Eridu is the last bastion of humanity, a neon-lit metropolis that has learned to coexist with the threat, even profiting from it through technology and proxies. As a player, you step into the shoes of a “Proxy,” a guide-for-hire who helps individuals navigate these hazardous dimensions. It’s an excellent setup that blends dungeon-crawling with a vibrant, character-driven story.
The roster of playable Agents has ballooned since launch. Initially, you had your pick of flashy sword wielders, elemental firearms experts, and agile brawlers, each belonging to a distinct faction with its own agenda. Now in 2026, we’ve seen cross-faction team-up systems, synergy tweaks, and about two dozen new characters added through regular updates. Pulling for your favorite agent still uses Master Tapes, and the thrill of that S-rank spark hasn’t dulled one bit. Veteran players will remember how the 40-million pre-registration reward pool gave everyone a solid head start – up to 20 Master Tapes and even a free playable Agent, which set a generous tone that HoYoverse mostly maintained over time.
Battle balance has evolved too. The combat was always fast and stylish, but recent patches doubled down on the “Chain Attack” and dodge-counter mechanics, making encounters feel like a rhythm game wrapped in a street-art festival. Dodging an Ethereal’s heavy blow at the last second triggers a slow-motion perfect dodge, followed by a barrage of flashy counters from your swapped-in teammates. It’s pure dopamine. And with the addition of co-op Hollow raids – a feature introduced in the 2025 anniversary expansion – you can now team up with friends to tackle towering bosses that require coordinated team compositions. The community has really latched onto building “meta” squads, but there’s still plenty of room for personal flair.
Beyond the fighting, New Eridu itself continues to be a character. The city is divided into districts, each with its own culture, soundtrack, and shady dealings. The detective-style commissions where you piece together clues for NPCs are some of the best storytelling in the game. HoYoverse has continuously layered in side-quests that explore the human cost of the Hollow disasters, and the writing stays away from heavy-handed exposition. It’s all delivered through snappy dialogue, comic-book style panels, and the occasional animated cutscene that fries your retinas with colour.
Pre-registration might be a distant memory now, but the spirit of discovery from those early days has carried forward. Daily training routines, weekly Hollow depth runs, and seasonal competitions keep the Proxies logging in. The in-game economy has been carefully managed to avoid the stinginess that sometimes plagues gacha titles, and events like the “Arcade Assault” or “Night Market Heist” regularly shake up the gameplay loop without feeling like a second job. Not to mention the soundtrack – seriously, the music team needs a raise. Every new area drop comes with tracks that bounce between breakbeat jazz, lo-fi hip-hop, and synthwave, making even the menu screens a vibe.
For anyone jumping in now, there’s a staggering amount of content waiting. The main campaign arcs through several chapters that take you deeper into the mystery of the Hollows and the true nature of Ethereals. Without spoiling too much, the revelations in the third major storyline update genuinely reframed what we thought we knew about the calamity. It’s a slow burn, but the character relationships – a found-family dynamic among the Proxy and their ever-growing contacts list – give it stakes beyond just saving the world.
HoYoverse has also expanded the platform support. While it launched on PS5, PC, iOS, and Android, we later got a native Xbox version, and cloud streaming options for lower-end devices, widening the audience further. Cross-progression was a godsend; start a commission on your phone, wrap it up on console without missing a beat. The only downside? Storage space. This thing is huge, but considering the sheer density of content and visual polish, that’s expected.
Looking ahead, the team has teased a new region beyond the outer ring of the city, possibly introducing a faction of rogue Proxies who reject the corporate control of New Eridu. The lore buffs are already putting together theories from cryptic environmental details in recent events. If HoYoverse keeps up this momentum, Zenless Zone Zero could easily remain a staple of the ARPG scene for years to come. Whether you’re a day-one Proxy or a curious newcomer, New Eridu’s doors are always open – just watch out for the Hollows.
